Antioxidants aim to protect the body's healthy cells against the action of free radicals. There are two types of antioxidants:
Enzymatics: are our body's natural antioxidant systems, with the function of fighting free radicals;
Non-enzymatic: which can be produced by our body, but are also acquired through food such as Vitamin C, E, Beta-carotene and Flavonoids.
Free radicals are produced by the cells in our body. These molecules can damage healthy cells in the body. There are factors that can contribute to the increased formation of these molecules, such as environmental pollution, cigarettes, alcohol, stress, inadequate diet, among others.
